Although I tend to veer away from the saying that ‘this is this musician’s year’ – because it generally lacks hope for a future and a long, prosperous career (as in good luck matching this for 2014 then…) – one musician who I think has had this phrase thrown around at him throughout the course of 2013 (and for good reason considering the feats he has achieved so far this year) is the spectacular Tom Odell.
Tom Odell is undoubtedly one of my favourite artists of this year – and certainly for many, many decades to come – with his live performances matching and easily doubling the energy and passion that come across so prevalently in his recordings. I first heard about this “piano man” musician at the latter end of 2012, when the gritty intensity of his music slashed through the bleak and relentlessly terrible English weather, and gave us all hope for the coming year. Now, as I post this at just before midnight on the 24/06/2013, his long awaited debut album is now soon to be officially released (and although the pre-order company mistakenly cancelled and then re-instated my order, which I have still not received) my excitement for the release of an album has never reached such heights.
As previously stated, generally my music tastes lean more over towards the electronic/ synthy/ experimental types, so for this to be my most anticipated album of the year – an album featuring a twenty something year old man playing his piano – is definitely saying something of the obscene talent that he beholds.
The almost gritty vocals and raw intensity of his music are showcased spectacularly in “Long Way Down”, the official debut from Tom Odell, and I am undoubtedly highly biased (considering how overwhelmed I am by his music) regarding him as a musician, but if it is uttered for just one moment, a concern over the quality of his music, or the skill or talent that is behind it, then that one moment is a complete fallacy and waste of precious breath.
Long Way Down has been streaming in full completely free on iTunes all week, and so I have heard it (and have also encouraged everyone else I know to hear it) and is available to buy from Monday 24th June 2013 from… just about anyway, and so I highly recommend and urge you to do so, to hear the sheer magic and brilliance encapsulated within this recording.
